As a co-chair of the Child Rights Action Group, Missing Children Europe took part in a significant event this week: the first plenary session of the newly elected European Parliament in Strasbourg. This visit, organised as part of the #VoteforChildren campaign, brought together representatives from various leading child-focused organisations, including Save the Children Europe, UNICEF EU, World Vision EU Representation, and SOS Children’s Villages. Our unified goal was clear: to ensure that children’s rights remain a top political priority for the European Union in the upcoming legislative term.

Call to Re-establish the Intergroup on Children’s Rights

The plenary session was a unique opportunity for MCE and its partners to engage directly with the newly elected Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) and key political group representatives. These discussions focused on collaborative strategies to ensure that no child, whether within or outside the EU, is left behind.

A crucial part of our advocacy was urging the European Parliament to re-establish the Intergroup on Children’s Rights. This intergroup has previously played a vital role in championing child rights issues within the EU legislative framework. Re-establishing it would ensure a dedicated platform for continuous dialogue and action on children’s rights, reinforcing the EU’s commitment to protecting its youngest citizens.

MEPs, left to right: Raquel García Hermida-van der Walle, Roxana Mînzatu, Evin Incir, Caterina Chinnici, Veronika Cifrová Ostrihoňová, Nathalie Loiseau, Niels Geuking, Mounir Satouri, Manuela Ripa.

Promoting the Child Rights Manifesto and the Europe Kids Want survey

As part of the discussion, MCE and partners presented the Child Rights Manifesto and the findings of the Europe Kids Want survey to MEPs. The Manifesto outlines the necessary commitments and actions MEPs should undertake to protect and promote children’s rights across Europe and beyond. We encouraged the newly elected MEPs to become Child Rights Champions. By doing so, they would pledge to safeguard and advance the rights of all children during their mandate.

As we move forward, we remain dedicated to advocating for policies and initiatives that protect and promote children’s rights. We call on all MEPs to join us in this critical mission and to make a lasting commitment to becoming true Child Rights Champions.
